From 31 August to 2 September, Montreux rocked to the beat of a special edition of Freddie Mercury's Montreux Memorial Day, marked by several symbolic anniversaries: Freddie Mercury's 65th birthday, the 15th anniversary of his statue on the lake shore, the 40th anniversary of Queen and the 20th anniversary of the singer's death.
Guests of honour included Freddie's sister Kashmira Cooke, her husband Roger Cooke, and Diana Moseley, creator of the singer's iconic costumes. A unique exhibition dedicated to Freddie and Queen was inaugurated at the Galerie Beauregard, attended by celebrities, exhibiting artists and local authorities.
The musical programme was eclectic and international, featuring Queen Unplugged Project (Hungary), Ashen Crows (Spain), The Royal Squeeze Box accompanied by singer Karin ten Cate in a concert at the Catholic Church, and the Pirate Swing Band led by Czech musician Jiri Sevcik. The event also featured original performances such as Swiss Folklore Meets Queen, a daring fusion of traditional Swiss music and rock, and a show by ROCK YOU, billed as the world's youngest Queen tribute band.
The weekend was enriched by several cultural events: a joint lecture by Diana Moseley and Peter Freestone, a screening of Maurice Béjart's famous Ballet for Life in the covered market hall, and a spectacular light show designed by Gerry Hofstetter, projected onto the statue of Freddie.
